It was indeed a spectacular sight to behold as the final matches of the 2011 National Badminton League (NBL) Pro Tour concluded at the Bellevue Badminton Club on Sunday. Nearly 200 fans of the sport attended to support the Seattle Smash as they challenged their divisional rivals, the Los Angeles Strings. The NBL teams consisted of various professional players currently travelling the world badminton circuit.
The tone of the evening was announced by the dynamic men's singles match as Guatemala's Kevin Cordon battled Austria's Michael Lahnsteiner in an intense pairing of skill and athleticism with some good-natured fun. Lahnsteiner proved victorious in the short rally-point game to 15, showcasing his relentless retrieval of Cordon's crafty attack - as well as making friends with the crowd (also the ‘line judges'-a running joke of the event).

I hope everyone is having a good winter at the club as we get set for our second session of junior lessons.
About two years ago in evaluating the junior program I realized we needed some outside coaching help to bring our technique and lessons up to national and international standards. This was just before the Beijing Summer Olympics. Following the Olympics we were very fortunate to have Raju Rai head up our lesson program, and then Huaiwen Xu not long after. Both of these coaches have worked extremely well with all our established coaches to bring up the level of professionalism of our classes. In addition, I have noticed even the youngest juniors are being taught to develop proper technique. Our classes are now at the highest level of any program in the country.

Dear Badminton Friends,
Leaves are slightly turning colors now, signaling the beginning of another badminton season. Hope you were able to finish all your outdoor summer projects (yes, cruise trip to Alaska counts!), kids settled in their new classes, and everyone tanned, fit, and ready to get back on courts!
This year, three junior players from Bellevue Badminton Club joined the USA team and participated in the Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships in August. To qualify, the teens had to compete in USAB JIT (Junior International Trials) tournament held in San Francisco first. Only the top 4 singles, top 4 mixed doubles and top two doubles pairs in each age group got selected. In other words, they were among the best junior players in the nation to represent USA in Pan Am. Great job, Renata Baker, Christine Chen and Vicky Chen!
