The scores are based on the average of the last 4 weeks of badminton play. This average is also a moving average. For example, at first it will take your week 1, 2, 3, and 4 scores and when week 5 comes around, it will drop your week 1 score and take week 2,3,4,5 scores. When one has one bad week and 3 good scoring weeks, it will still result in a good 4 week average. However, it doesn’t guarantee the person will move up, because the ranking system is designed so that the top player of a lower court is equivalent to the 4th player in the above court. However, if all the players in the above court scored a really high average, such as everyone losing or winning 21-19, then people in the lower court may not get to catch up. Based on the last few years of league results, this scenario is very rare.
The software was created so that we could keep a consistent level of good games for everyone. Each court is weighted differently as well. Each court is weighted 15% weaker than the above court, so court 2 is weighted 15% weaker than court 1, and so on. The best way to move up in the league is to win all your matches. This way you would have scored the maximum possible points available for that league day. We do not base our rankings on wins and losses because every doubles game's teams are different. Thus, it is only fair to take the final points scored. If one loses 21-19, that is a close loss and it shouldn’t hurt the scoring average, but losing 21-13 is a bad loss and could affect the scoring average.
One factor we cannot control is who actually signs up to play, and that is one of the advantages of the league because there is no pressure on attendance. Some people might be free this week and some might not. One week we may have a very strong field of players and also a big field of 50 players. So people who were normally on Court 3 (group C) probably went down to Court 4 (group D), but their ranking did not drop. What happened was the field of players got bigger and stronger. Instead of playing on Group 3 out of 5 total Groups, they were in Group 4 out of 6 Total Groups.
We also give out 1 extra point (up to 4 points) for participation. The league rewards players who are consistent in participation and games performance. This could result in a difference of few ranking positions and could be the difference of 1 group higher.
This is not the perfect system. We don’t think there is a way to have a perfect system. The committee that is helping out consists of member volunteers and they are constantly working on improving the system. Our goal is to create a fun league where everyone can get good games. At the end of the day, we all know it is all for the fun.
Occasionally we get some serious players that always want to be on the top court. We always remind people that this is not a tournament nor a competition to see who the best player is. Instead, it is a way to exercise, get good games, have fun, meet people and to be part of a community, create some level of competitiveness, and to improve badminton play for everyone.
