Juniors Strike Gold at Super Regional
While the Thomas Cup Preliminaries were wrapping up, over 40 juniors from our Team 1, 2, 3, Elite, and Junior Elite classes were competing at the Northwest Junior Super Regional Tournament. The tournament was held at the Seattle Badminton Club, and the results of the tournament will help players earn ranking points nationally.
For many of our juniors this was their first time playing competitors from out of state, and the experience of the Super Regional serves as a good opportunity to learn how to play in a higher level tournament, prepare for a tough match, and what to expect from the level of play from other juniors around the country.
The tournament was also more than just a learning experience for a handful of our juniors. Vicky Chen and Christine Chen made it to the finals in all three events. Vicky powered her way to a triple crown in U17 while Christine won the U19 mixed doubles. The U19 girls singles finals was unique in that it featured Christine Chen and Rochelle Ng, both from Bellevue. Rochelle claimed a narrow victory in three sets, and then teamed up with Christine for the doubles, but was not as fortunate as they lost 21-19 in the third set.
As we roll into Spring and Summer draws nearer and nearer, our young competitors will be preparing to represent themselves, our team, and our club at Junior Nationals, held this year at the Orange County Badminton Club; and a select few will be heading to Boston in April to qualify for the Junior Pan American Games.
Congratulations to all of our juniors who participated in the Super Regional, and a big thank you to Coach Paz Ben-Sira, Coach Amy Jin, and all the other coaches who helped out during the matches.
