Coach Toby is from Vancouver, Canada, He started badminton at a young age, playing with his family recreationally, including his brother, Head Coach Derrick! Despite not being able to win any junior national titles, Toby continued competing under recommendations from his coach and Canadian Olympian, Darryl Yung. Eventually, this led to further opportunites for training under the legendary Kim Dong Moon, a two-time Olympic gold medalist from South Korea. Under Kim’s instruction for about four years, Toby qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in mixed doubles, reaching a best world ranking of 16.
During his competition years, Toby continued pursuing his university education and completed a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology, followed by a strength & conditioning certification from the NSCA. Toby continued competing while furthering his coaching education until he retired from international competition in 2018. He has been on the Canadian national team for more than a decade, and represented Canada at seven World Championships between 2009-2018.
After retirement, Toby continued his coaching certifications in Canada and completed a Master’s in High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership. He was also the Performance Lead and Technical Director for Badminton British Columbia for two years. He also served as the athlete representative on the competitions committee and the high performance committee with Badminton Canada. He is still active as a coach developer for Badminton BC.
Toby has more than 15 years of coaching experience and is constantly finding new ways to improve his coaching, integrating badminton experience with coaching science. His hobbies include reading, writing, cooking, and competing in the occasional badminton tournament!
